The weather is slowly but surely resembling Florida again. While we still recommend you bring a blanket or snuggie, we think that Friday night will be a wonderful night to come down to the Riverwalk and enjoy Godspell.
This is the rocking, groovy 1973 version. When Straz Center presents Godspell Feb. 9 - May 16 you will see a modernized interpretation of the show.
Wear your tie-dyed sweatshirts on Friday night, put a bandanna on your dog, a peace sign on your baby's cheek and enjoy a beautiful evening under the stars. It's all free and all part of enjoying your Straz Center.

Movies on the Lawn are BACK!
Last year we launched our free movie series in Sept. with The Wizard of Oz. We knew we had a great event on our hands. We also knew that a movie in Sept. in Tampa was a little too humid for our tastes.
This year we waited until Oct. to start our series. We're kicking it off with Coraline. All of our movies reflect some aspect of our Broadway season. Coraline is a lot like our new musical Wonderland. Both involve girls finding their way back home from a strange universe.
Movies on the Lawn always occur on the second Fri. of the month and begin at 8 p.m. You can bring lawn chairs, blankets, bug spray and even come in costume! Sorry, you can't bring coolers. If you have any questions you can always email me and I'll be happy to help you out.
This is one of my favorite events all year, we'll have such a good time. Will I see you there?

Tweet up! Both sides of the Bay!
As you know, TBPAC loves social media! We've been on board since the beginning. Social media is the fastest growing segment of our marketing strategies and our fans/friends/followers are the best around!
We've partnered with St. Pete Tweets and the TampaBloggers to do a very special networking event this Friday! Beginning at 6:30 on October 9, we will be doing "haunted tours" of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. This is the underground stuff you never get to see - evacuation tunnels, views under the stages, and some stories that you won't believe!
Then our bloggers and tweeters have a couple of options at 8 p.m. You can either see the always red-hot Florida Orchestra's Rhythms on Fire, Jobsite Theater's hilarious comedy And Baby Makes 7 (and get 1/2 off your ticket price with the promo code CECIL), or you can save your pennies and see the free movie on the lawn Coraline.

"Doing it on the Road" - a free workshop for touring artists
A free workshop for performing artists who take their work on tour across the country will be held on Friday June 5 from 4:00-6:00pm, in the TECO Theater at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, as part of the National Performance Network’s support of and service to performing artists. The workshop is being offered by the National Performance Network (NPN) in conjunction with NPN Partner Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
According to Karla Hartley, Shimberg Playhouse’s Artistic Director, all over the country, contemporary performing artists are going outside their local communities, bringing their art to audiences that are eager to see new and innovative theater, dance, music, spoken word, and puppetry. “Touring, a significant aspect of the contemporary performing arts world, presents artists with enormous creative and business demands,” Hartley said. “NPN is interested in sharing what it really takes to take your show on the road. And if you are already touring your work, what more can you do to make the experience more successful?” “Doing it on the Road: a Guide for Touring Performing Artists” is a free information-packed workshop, designed and presented by the NPN. “Doing it” demystifies the touring process for artists who are interested in touring, are ready and have the capacity to tour, have already toured regionally or want to expand touring their work.
NPN devotes a large part of its programming in support of touring artists. After almost 25 years as a national nonprofit arts organization, NPN is very familiar with what it takes for artists to tour their work. NPN has 61 “Partner” presenters in 41 cities across the U.S., and represents diverse cultural organizers, including artists, working to create meaningful partnerships and to provide leadership that enables the practice and public experience of the performing arts in the United States.
“Doing it on the Road” takes place in conjunction with each of the 4 NPN Partners Regional Meetings and is hosted by an NPN Partner. Picture Incomplete opens this year's Off Center Series - this weekend!
I have a special attachment to the Shimberg Playhouse. Of all five halls at TBPAC, I likely spend the second-most amount of my time in the building in that room (the first of course being my office).
The Shimberg hosts a lot of events, but my attachment is mostly to my own Jobsite Play Series as well as the Off Center Series.
Before Jobsite ever began working in the Shimberg, I watched shows in the Shimberg Playhouse (then the Off Center Theater) that I couldn't have seen anywhere else in the region.
In the 10 years I've been in Tampa I've seen gripping solo work like Danny Hoch's Jails, Hospitals and Hip Hop (my first Off Center show). I've been delighted by the female clown troupe Gams on the Lam (twice). I've had the opportunity to take workshops from the Gams and from Shawn McConneloug and Her Orchestra. There have been puppets, gay Jewish jugglers and a one man play about an artist who cut his ear off as written by Spock and performed by a USF alum. Karla Hartley has done an outstanding job bringing quality, innovative work to TBPAC year in and year out.
The importance of work like this can't be overstated. Truly, this sort of work exists no where else in the region. Like much of what we do at TBPAC, you simply won't find it anywhere else.
It's often difficult to attract an audience to unknown plays even by known local or national companies. It can be far more challenging to attract an audience to unknown work by unknown players.
To be blunt, in these difficult financial times work like this is often among the first to be put on the cutting block - despite how mission-oriented it might be. It's economics, plain and simple. It's why we're trying to make such a push for this year's series, so that's not even an option.
The first of this year's Off Center Series is this weekend. It's Picture Incomplete - a one man musical. I spoke to Karla last night, and she tells me how great the show sounds from the rehearsals they've already had in the building. Some TBPAC patrons may even remember Trent Armand Kendall from his performance in Diva Diaries a few years back. He's a driven performer who is taking time from his other gig - part of the national tour for The Color Purple - to bring his show to us in Tampa this weekend.
Not to hard sell or anything, but there is a special offer on this year's series for just $49 for all four shows available through this weekend. It's a great deal, check it out if you're interested. Trent is also offering a free workshop on Friday on the subject of creating a musical.

TBPAC and the national tour of SPRING AWAKENING are looking for eager, energetic theater fanatics to join THE GUILTY ONES, the official street team for Broadway's groundbreaking new musical, SPRING AWAKENING.
What is Spring Awakening?
Broadway’s most talked about new musical and the biggest Tony Award®-winner in years, Spring Awakening, the 8-time Tony Award® winning Broadway musical, will make its premiere at TBPAC on Dec. 30, 2008, and run through Jan. 4, 2009.
Based on the infamous 1891 Frank Wedekind play, Spring Awakening features an electrifying score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by award-winning Bill T. Jones and Book by Mr. Sater. Set against the backdrop of a repressive and provincial late 19th century Germany, Spring Awakening tells the timeless story of teenage self-discovery and budding sexuality as seen through the eyes of three teenagers. Haunting and provocative, Spring Awakening celebrates an unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood.

The Guilty Ones started as a group of fans in New York who loved SPRING AWAKENING so much, they decided to organize and spread the word on their own. As SPRING AWAKENING prepares to launch its first national tour, TBPAC will be following in the original Guilty Ones’ footsteps by establishing the Guilty Ones as our official street team of guerilla marketers.
What do I have to do to become a Guilty One?
Your involvement with The Guilty Ones can include as little or as much as you want to do. We’ll be operating everything on a point system which means the more "deeds" you do to help us promote the show, the more awesome “junk” you’ll receive.
"Deeds" include using MySpace, Twitter, Facebook or your personal blogs to get the word out, putting up flyers and posters in places you hang out, recruiting more members and a lot more.
"Junk" includes free t-shirts, free autographed tour merchandise, the ability to buy special on-stage seats, meet and greets with the cast and possibly even a FREE opening night package which includes all the stuff listed above.

Encore! Encore! No really, encore!
Solo encores have fallen out of favor in the opera. Fairly common in the 19th century, the practice fell out favor when opera became more “serious.”

The Met has explicitly banned solo encores for much of the 20th century. In fact, the only one that has been documented was in 1994 (but we’ll get to that in a moment).
14 years later, history was made at the Met when Juan Diego Florez performed a solo encore of the challenging tenor aria “Ah! Mes Amis.” Filled with high C’s this “tenor tester” brought the house to its knees and provided a thrilling moment for all opera lovers. The challenging role is said to launch tenor’s careers at the Met and is credited as being the “star-making” role of Luciano Pavarotti (but we’ll get to that in a moment).
Juan Diego Florez currently stars with Natalie Dessay in a new production of Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment. Peter Gelb, the Met’s general manager, has said that there would be no encore ban on his watch, to make opera “as entertaining and exciting for the audience as it can be.”
Cool.
So back to that 1994 solo encore – any guesses? It was Luciano Pavarotti, singing the second-act tenor aria in Tosca.
